Canasta vs Rummy 500

Canasta and Rummy 500 are both rummy games where the discard pile is the big prize, but Canasta is far grander. It uses two decks and four jokers, twos and jokers are wild, and the aim is to build canastas, melds of seven cards worth 500 points when natural and 300 when mixed. Four players play as two partnerships.

Rummy 500 is lighter: no wild cards, melds of three or more laid down as you go, and a discard pile you can dig into. Every player scores for themselves, and a round ends as soon as someone runs out of cards.

The differences that matter

  • Cards: Canasta uses two decks plus four jokers with twos and jokers wild; Rummy 500 has no wild cards.
  • The pile: in Canasta you take the whole discard pile, and only under conditions (it can be frozen); in Rummy 500 you take any card plus everything above it.
  • Melds: Canasta melds are cards of one rank, aiming for seven-card canastas; Rummy 500 allows both sets and runs.
  • Going out: in Canasta your side must have a canasta first; in Rummy 500 you can go out whenever your hand empties.
  • Target: Canasta plays to 1500, 3000 or 5000; Rummy 500 plays to 500.

Which should you play?

Choose Canasta if you enjoy long, strategic sessions with a partner and big scoring hands.

Choose Rummy 500 if you want a quicker rummy that still rewards grabbing the right cards from the pile.

How to play Canasta

Two decks plus four jokers. Twos and jokers are wild. Red 3s are set aside automatically for bonus points (and count against you if your side never melds).

Draw from the stock or take the whole discard pile — only if its top card is not wild or a black 3, and you can meld it (join an existing meld, or make a new one with two natural cards; one natural plus a wild if the pile is not frozen). The pile is frozen after a wild is discarded and until your side has melded.

Melds are 3+ cards of one rank with at least two naturals and fewer wilds than naturals (max three). Seven cards make a canasta: 500 natural, 300 mixed. Your first meld must reach 50 points (15 if your score is negative, 90 from 1500, 120 from 3000).

Go out by emptying your hand after your side has a canasta (+100). Black 3s can only be melded when going out. Unmelded cards count against you. First side to the target score (1500, 3000 or 5000) wins.

How to play Rummy 500

Draw one card from the stock, or take any card from the spread discard pile together with all cards above it. The deepest card you took must be used immediately in a meld or laid off.

Meld sets (3-4 of a rank) and runs (3+ in a suit, ace low or high). You may lay off single cards on anyone's melds. Then discard one card.

A round ends when a player empties their hand. You score the value of the cards you melded minus the cards left in your hand. Aces are 15 (1 in A-2-3), face cards 10.

First to 500 points wins (highest score if several pass 500).
